{Church x Fitness Message} 15 Commandments of Fitness?

“Do you have any rules your parents have for you at home?”…

… Pastor Jon Paul asked the small gathering of kids sitting on the front “stage” in church this morning.

This is one of my favorite parts of the church service…

… About a third of the way through they have all the kids in church gather up near the front and the Pastor or Jasmine, the Bible school teacher, gives them all a message.

I like it because since they are kiddos,

the message and lesson is a real simple one, and I’m not the smartest knife in the drawer so I can understand it too. 🙂

After Pastor Jon Paul asked that, one of the kids raised his hand and said,

Mom says no more jumping on the couch.”

Just then much of the church started laughing.

From there Pastor Jon Paul talked about the 10 Commandments us Christians have.

How those are like our “rules”.

Then he gave some amazing insight into them that I’ve wondered about, but never heard anyone talk about it before…

… Why Did God Give Us Them Anyway?

Breaking the rules at home, the consequences are pretty well laid out:

  • loss of iPad time
  • get playtime taken away
  • time-outs
  • no candy

Our kiddo is 16 months old so we aren’t there as far as implementing these consequences yet, but if you have some good ideas, let me know!

Pastor Jon Paul then asked the curious kiddos if they had any idea WHY these rules were there. WHY are there consequences.

None of them could think of the reason so Pastor said that us grown-ups have those rules to have boundaries on behaviors.

So that everyone in the family can benefit.

Rules in the classroom so that can benefit.

He said that God gave us these 10 Commandments as a Gift.

They are his laws given to us so that we all could benefit. Because He loves us.

As a Workout Hero, you’re someone that cares about your health…

… your fitness

… your shape

… the appearance and condition of your body

… you care about your future… the future of your loved ones.

… it’s that same idea with any Fitness “Rules” we have.

They are there as gifts.

Not so much as a gift from me, but a gift you give from yourself to your body & well-being.

A gift you give your future self. A gift to your loved ones.

So what would be the “Commandments” here in the Workout Hero Club?

Any ideas?

Instead of 10, I think I have it boiled down to just these 5…

  1. Thou shalt get in at least one Anti-fragile Workout a week (if you’re new here and don’t know what I mean with that, don’t worry, you’ll be filled in. 😊) if you can do more, more power and results to you.
  2. Thou shalt have their weekly incoming calories controlled
  3. Thou shalt put an emphasis on getting quality sleep
  4. Thou shalt be good enough most of the time
  5. If thou shalt “fall down”, thou shalt get back up, dust oneself off, and get back at it! (fill in the blank with whatever meaning for “fall down” you like — whether it is falling off the wagon of healthy eating, or skipping a week or 2 of workouts, or anything else.  Doesn’t matter… You get back at it. You are too valuable.

Too talented.

Too important to sit on the sidelines and miss out. Your future and the future of your loved ones are beyond worth it.

So them are our 5 for now, and if they should change, I’ll let you know…

…(especially if the kids start jumping on the weight benches at the gym, might need to add that one) 😉

Let me know your thoughts on that, if thou pleaseth your kind self. 🙂

May God bless you and your fitness journey, my brave Workout Hero, honored to be by your side.

Your Guide & biggest fan,

Erick

P.S.

Whenever I hear talks about the 10 Commandments, I can’t help but think of this from the 80’s

…Mel Brooks steps out from the cave carrying 3 stone tablets with Commandments written on each one.

“Hear me! Hear me! All pay heed! The Lord Jehovah, has given unto you these 15….”

…. just like that, Mel Brooks playing Moses, accidentally drops one of the tablets and it goes crashing onto the ground and breaking into dozens of pieces… 😳😳😳

He looks at for a few impossibly long seconds, then shouts,

“10 Commandments for all to obey!” 😂
